my lecture was interrupted by prosh week fools this morning, and they
refused to leave when my lecturer asked them (politely and repeatedly) to
move on. the lecturer then proceeded to walk out, before he had explained
the details of the assessment - worth 40% of the mark for this subject.
i am extremely disappointed to have missed out on this - my educational
experience should not be limited or hindered by prosh week events, no
matter how "historical" or "traditional" the week is. it seems to me to
have degenerated into an excuse to be drunk for a week and show off in a
boring, predictable, and puerile manner. what a joke.
while i have been a union member for my entire time at melbourne i am
going to seriously reconsider joining the union next year if this is the
crap my money gets spent on.
this is an absolute disgrace.

You're going to have to go ahead and tell me what the hell "prosh eek" is, so I can understand the gravity of this post.

there's a link there which explains it. but it's stupider than that. it's just entitled college kids causing disruptions. like week-long muck-up day. very annoying, and sometimes dangerous. i think it should be banned.

How...stupid. That is why I didn't join the Monash society for Arts students, all their activities are just an excuse to get drunk and be embarrassing all over campus. Your "prosh week" seems way worse though. I pity you at this time.

I definitely understand your frustration, but don't let it put you off joining the student union. I'm sure most of the people in Student Union are annoyed they have to spend money on that crap as well.

*never understood melbourne uni college culture*

I hope they reply!

i am a staunch unionist, and always have been, but they have to understand that in a culture of vsu, union members are paying customers who are going to withdraw that custom if they don't see value in what they're spending their money on.

Speaking as one who sees far too many prosh week morons at work -- usually creating noise and mess and making other customers uncomfortable -- I would be more than happy to see the "tradition" come to an end.

UQ coped with the loss of their toga parties. MU can cope without prosh week.

Interesting. I wouldn't have thought that kind of thing happened at MU.

yeah we seem to be the serious cultivated uni, but actually we're he uni full of rich, entitled white kids with too much time on their hands and too little respect for anyone or anything.

Ha- that's pretty much what my original comment said, before I softened it. The words 'spoilt brats' were the first to come to mind. It's a shame that MU carries such prestige, but like any prestigious school it's the spoilt, rich kids that make up far too much of the population.

:( Like - I get the whole appeal of it? But I can also understand how freaking frustrating it would be to have important classes disrupted.

you know what? so much of the undergrad experience is about getting pissed abd pulling randon stunts - i don't understand why they have to get organised and make an event out of it.

It's a real pity that you found Prosh week stuff interfering with your studies. It's not supposed to.

*puts on old man tone*
Back in my day Prosh week did include drunkenness, but a lot of the events were carefully directed towards the silly, creative end of such things, rather than the messy, ugly end of it.

Lecture stunts are a key example of a watershed between creative disruption and inanity. Great lecture stunts include things such as presenting Nude Shakespeare to a literature class, or presenting a dancing skeleton to an anatomy class. Most importantly, brevity is the soul of wit, and so any interruption should be brief.

Since the main way that anything to do with a lecture could be part of prosh week is through scav hunt, there would need to be a judge in the lecture (and they normally just want to go to their own lectures). Since the judge is not going to want to miss important stuff, nor is the judge going to want to watch anything "boring, predictable and puerile", then what you're talking about isn't really in the spirit of prosh week, at least, not the Prosh week that I knew.

By all means, complain about the effect. Complain about the spirit. But don't throw the baby out with the bathwater.
